Ray, Japhy, and chattering maniac Henry Morley soon set off to climb the daunting Matterhorn Peak in California's Sawtooth Ridge. He proves to be a serious and meditative Buddhist scholar as well as a party animal who shares alcohol and women with his friends. ![]() Ray and his friend Alvah Goldbook share a small cottage in Berkeley, and Japhy lives down the street in an even more humble dwelling. Ray attends a rowdy poetry jam at "Gallery Six" in which a number of his friends perform, but he is more impressed by the forthright poetry of Japhy Ryder. Inspired, he calls the man a "Dharma Bum" and then begins to recount a series of adventures that he has undergone with other such free-spirited people. The novel opens with Ray Smith meeting an old bum while traveling on a freight train in California. Between meditation and revelry, Ray, who is modeled off of Kerouac himself, finds steadfast friendship and meaning in the wide and crazy world. ![]() Written in Jack Kerouac's signature easy and free-flowing style, The Dharma Bums tells the story of Ray Smith and his adventures as a hitchhiker, mountaineer, and aspiring Buddha. ![]() ![]() All I play is the game of Uno and the game of life - !!! - but reading this book about making and playing games, friendship, and collaboration, was the best reading time I had this summer. ![]() I loved everything about this book but the ending, page 397, when there quite surprisingly to me weren’t any more pages. Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin, a book I cannot stop thinking about, a book that I scream-cried about when I finished, a book I have forced everyone in my life to read. Although it’s short on specifics, the two-minute clip is sure to pique the interest of auto enthusiasts. (Coincidentally, Chevy only recently unveiled the world’s first hybrid ‘Vette, the new E-Ray.) It sounds like there is also a biodiesel conversion on the cards-if the scene with Downey’s son at about 54 seconds is anything to go by. The new trailer suggests that a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, a Chevy Camaro, and a VW Kombi could be treated to new emissions-free power trains. “It was a huge challenge and an enlightening journey.” “The last three years have been an experiment in hope, as I engaged the best and brightest minds to evaluate, educate, elevate, and decarbonize these vehicles in a way that demonstrates the limitless potential of creative problem solving,” Downey adds. The actor enlisted a team of engineers and mechanics to convert his beloved American classics from the 1960s and ‘70s into modern-day hybrids and EVs that are less harmful to the environment. ![]() “Downey’s Dream Cars” will debut on June 22. ![]() ![]() ![]() You cannot have introspection on TV everything has to be presented visually, which was sort of a fun challenge. I won’t make you wait another year after you’ve invested in 10 episodes. By the end, you’ll find out where Jesse has been, who’s lying, who’s telling the truth. I’m not going to not give an answer just to have a season two. When Nicola Shindler approached me about a book that was already under option, I said, “I have this other idea that’s sticking in my head.” ![]() It was an idea niggling in my brain to maybe make into a novel, but I’d never written a novel with four leads, which this has … I always see stories visually and this one was more visual than most. Every day they’d send me rushes by email and I would study them like a rabbinical student studies the Talmud. Dan Mercer stands accused of being a sexual predator thanks to the ambush journalism of Wendy Tynes, a tabloid TV reporter, who must cope with her husbands. Rasmira, our protagonist, is a very likeable character and it's really easy to get on her side and root for her survival and success. It probably doesn't help that that's not how I picture either of them and that kissing under the moonlight by a lake (while it may happen in the book) just doesn't really encompass the whole of what's going on in this story. The cover of the sequel just doesn't measure up, in my opinion. The newer cover of Leaving Paradise struck just the right note, when it comes to the fear and pain and connection between these two characters. And I hadn't even read the first book yet! I was so happily surprised (and intensely affected) by Leaving Paradise that I couldn't wait to start in on the sequel, the inevitably titled Return to Paradise. ![]() |
